The 39 Steps and Boeing-Boeing win Tony Awards
Matthew Warchus’ revival of Marc Camoletti’s play Boeing-Boeing and John Buchan’s classic, The 39 Steps, have both taken home two gongs from the 62 annual Tony Awards held in New York.
However other British prospects left empty handed, including the Menier Chocolate Factory’s revival of Sunday in the Park with George, which received 13 Tony nominations and won five Olivier Awards last year. Patrick Stewart also just missed out for his portrayal of Shakespearian legend, Macbeth.
Classic sixties farce Boeing-Boeing, which ran in London last year, won ‘Best Play Revival’ on Broadway and ‘Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play’ for original West End cast member, Mark Rylance. Rylance beat Patrick Stewart (Macbeth), Rufus Sewell (Rock ‘n’ Roll) and Ben Daniels (Les Liaisons Dangereuses) to prize.
Meanwhile, The 39 Steps won ‘Best Lighting’ and ‘Sound Design’ for Kevin Adams and Mic Pool. The 39 Steps was adapted for the stage by Patrick Barlow from John Buchan’s novel, but it is closer to the plot of Alfred Hitchcock film version than the book. On stage, The 39 Steps manages to recreate some of the breathtaking escape scenes from the Hitchcock film: scenes many thought impossible within the confines of the Criterion Theatre.
