Calendar Girls laid bare for the stage
Calendar Girls, Adapted by Tim Firth from the hit film arrives at the Noel Coward Theatre after a successful national tour. The new cast will include Gemma Atkinson, Jill Halfpenny, Jill Baker, Jerry Hall, June Brown, Richenda Carey, Sara Crowe, Anita Dobson, Delia Lindsay, Will Knightley, Niel McCaul and Jack Ryder.
Calendar Girls follows the moving, true story of 12 Rylstone Women’s Institute members, who decide to pose for a nude charity calendar after one member’s husband dies from Leukemia. Little could they have predicted the worldwide media furore that the calendar would create and its affect on all of their lives.
Playing the feisty Chris Harper in Calendar Girls is Anita Dobson. The role of Chris Harper was made famous by Helen Mirren in the film and she received a Golden Globe for her performance. Dobson is perhaps best remembered as the as the landlady of the Queen Vic pub in Eastenders.
Dobson is joined on stage by Jill Baker playing Annie Clarke, the lady whose husband’s death motivates the WI ladies to strip for the calendar. During her 30 year career, Hodge has appeared in various films such as Shakespeare in Love and Notes on a Scandal.
Other Calendar Girls cast members include June Brown, best known as Dot Cotton in Eastenders and Jerry Hall who has appeared as Mrs Robinson in The Graduate and Bus Stop.
