Alan Ayckbourn’s 1972 play, Absurd Person Singular, recounts the changing fortunes of three married couples over three successive Christmases. The play runs at the Garrick Theatre from 28 November 2007 to 21 March 2008.

Play plot

Its Christmas time at Sidney and Jane Hopcroft’s house as they entertain their guests Geoffrey and Eva Turner, and Ronald and Marion Brewster-Wright. But Christmas cheer is the last thing on the Hopcroft’s minds as they try to climb the social ladder. The next two acts explore the havoc and reversal of fortunes which ensue when the Turners and Brewster-Wrights return the favour and host Christmas at their homes.

Absurd Person Singular Background

Absurd Person Singular written by Alan Ayckbourn made its London début in July 1972 and its official Broadway début in October 1974. In 1985, the BBC produced a television drama adapted from the play. The TV show started Michael Gambon, Lesley Joseph, Geoffrey Palmer and Prunella Scales. Alan Strachan’s production of Absurd Person Singular opens at The Garrick Theatre in November.
