About Avenue Q

Avenue Q is an irreverent and funny musical parody of classic US shows like Sesame Street and the Muppets. Unlike these shows, Avenue Q explores some rather adult topics through the eyes of a bunch of twenty and thirty-something puppets and people.

Show story

Avenue Q is set in Outer Borough, a rundown district of New York. Into this melting pot comes Princeton, a wide-eyed college graduate searching for his purpose in life. Accompanied by his band of weird and wacky friends and neighbours, Princeton goes on an amusing journey of self-discovery.

Avenue Q background

Avenue Q was created by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, who began writing the script for TV in 1999. In 2002, Avenue Q opened at the Vineyard Theatre, quickly transferring to Broadway after rave reviews. The London production opened in June 2006 at the Noel Coward Theatre, London. The musical has won three American Tony Awards and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical.

Puppet inspiration

Some of Avenue Q's characters bear a striking resemblance to Sesame Street and Muppet characters (although Avenue Q is completely separate). The room-mates Rod and Nicky are versions of Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie, while Trekkie Monster is a play on Cookie Monster! If you are looking for a funny, naughty night out, Avenue Q will be right up your street.

Important info: Avenue Q contains scenes of an adult nature which may be unsuitable for children under 12 years of age. Children under 5 will not be admitted.
