About Brief Encounter

Classic film Brief Encounter premiered at The Cinema Haymarket in 1946. Now, Brief Encounter is back at The Cinema, courtesy of Kneehigh Theatre. This live production combines Brief Encounter’s screenplay with Noel Coward’s original stage play Still Life.

Play plot

Brief Encounter follows the lives and loves of three couples, as they convene in a station tearoom. Housewife Laura Jesson bumps into Dr Alec Harvey at the railway station: although already married they meet every Thursday and gradually fall in love - can it ever work? Noel Coward’s words and songs create a breathtaking, funny and tear-inducing show.

Brief Encounter background

Brief Encounter is staged by Kneehigh Theatre, Cornwall’s International Theatre Company. The production switches seamlessly between theatre and film, combining Coward’s original stage play, Still Life, with the screenplay of Brief Encounter. Kneehigh’s Artistic Director, Emma Rice, seeks to take us back to a bygone era of romance and the silver screen.

Real atmosphere

Enjoy Brief Encounter at The Cinema Haymarket, where the surroundings transport you to an age when cinemas had chandeliers, champagne and tea served on trays. Opened in 1926 as The Carlton, The Cinema Haymarket was designed to host both plays and films – making it the perfect venue for Brief Encounter.
