About Buddy the Musical

Buddy is a musical celebration of the legendary singer/songwriter Buddy Holly, who shot to stardom in 1957 with hits like 'Peggy Sue', 'True Love Ways' and ‘That’ll be the Day’.

Show story

Buddy the Musical follows the life story of Buddy Holly, from his early days in Texas as an up-and-coming country singer to the tragic events of 2 February 1959. On route we see Buddy’s relationship with The Crickets, the major falling out with Decca records, his successful partnership with Norman Petty and whirlwind marriage to Maria Elena Santiago.

Buddy Background

The idea for Buddy the Musical came from London-based Laurie Mansfield, who involved film producer Greg Smith and West End producter, Paul Elliot. The support of former Beatle Paul McCartney (who owned the copyrights to Holly's music) ensured that the show became a reality. Buddy spent 12 years in the West End, toured extensively and enjoyed success on Broadway. It was revived by Rob Bettinson in 2007.

First jukebox musical

Buddy was one of the first jukebox musicals, featuring songs by Buddy Holly and other singer of the era, including Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke and Ritchie Valens. Buddy opened in London’s West End in October 1989 and ran until 2002. Revived in 2007 and playing at the Duchess Theatre, Buddy is still attracting large audiences and is the world’s most popular Rock ‘n’ Roll musical.
