About Hairspray
Hairspray is based on John Water’s 1988 movie of the same name. The stage show has won three Tony Awards, including Best Original Score and Best Musical. Hairspray is a light-hearted tale of a girl with a big heart and big hair who goes from outsider to celebrity.
Show Story
Set in 1962, Hairspray is the story of Tracy Turnblad, a Baltimore teenager, whose passion in life is dancing. When Tracy wins a spot on the Corny Collins Show she becomes a TV celebrity overnight, but can she beat the show’s reigning champ Amber Von Tussle and win the heart of hunk Link Larkin?
Hairspray background
Hairspray the film was written and directed by John Waters: the master of shocking yet thought-provoking films. Waters is regarded as one of the founders of the American independent film movement and acted as a consultant on the musical.
Men as women
Hairspray’s Edna Turnblad is traditionally played by a man in drag. In the West End production (which opens in October 2007) Edna is to be played by Michael Ball. Other notable Edna’s on stage and in film include John Travolta, Harvey Fierstein and Divine.
As of the 28th April 2008 Michael Ball will NOT be performing on Monday evenings.
The role of Edna Turnblad will be played by Adam Price on Monday evening performances and also performances on 2 August and from 15 - 22 September.
