About Les Miserables

Les Misérables (or Les Mis) is one the most performed musicals in the world. The show celebrated its 21st anniversary in October 2006 and is now the longest-running West End musical in history. Les Misérables is powerful theatre, filled with passion and emotion as lead character Jean Valjean strives for his liberty.

Show Story

Les Misérables tells the story of paroled convict Jean Valjean and his efforts to live an honest life. Faced with prejudice because of his past, Jean hides his identity to live in peace. Les Mis the musical covers 20 years of French history, including the Napoleonic wars. It is an epic tale of good, evil, justice, love and religion.

Les Misérables background

Les Misérables opened at the Barbican Theatre, London in 1985 and today plays at the Queen’s Theatre. The musical was composed by Claude-Michel Schőnberg and Alain Boublil. Les Mis has won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score. Memorable songs include ‘I dreamed a dream’, ‘One Day More’, ‘On My Own’ and ‘Do you hear the people sing?’

Novel values

Les Misérables the musical is based on the French novel by Victor Hugo. The novel follows the interactions of several French characters over many years: thus the show features two generations of principle characters. You will see Jean, Thenardiers and Javert age over the acts, while Cosette and Eponine are initially played by children.
