The Lord of the Rings at the Drury Lane Theatre, is one of the West End’s newest musicals. Packed with action, romance and fantasy, this is a mammoth production, featuring a cast of over 50 actors and a big budget set.
Show story
Frodo Baggins, a humble hobbit from Middle Earth, is forced to embark on a dangerous journey to destroy the Ring of Power and defeat the Dark Lord Sauron. Accompanied by three other hobbits, a wizard, an elf, two men and dwarf, Frodo battles Orcs, the evil wizard Saruman, Gollum and himself on route to Mount Doom.
Lord of the Rings background
The Lord of the Rings was written by J.R.R. Tolkien between 1937 and 1949. Tolkien created an extensive fantasy world called Middle Earth with many races, languages and mythologies. The three-hour musical covers most of the books’ content and features original songs written by A.H. Rahman and Värttinä.
Big budget
The Lord of the Rings is the most expensive musical ever staged outside of Las Vegas, costing a reported £25 million. The scale is immense: with a £1 million, 40 ton rotating stage divided into 17 sections, 50 actors, 19 musicians, 60 crew members and 504 costumes. This is a show that has to be seen to be believed.
