About Marguerite
A love story set in Paris during the Second World War, Marguerite draws inspiration from one of the greatest of romantic novels, La Dame aux Camélias by Alexandre Dumas. The musical will play at the Haymarket Theatre from 7 May to 31 October 2008.
Show story
Marguerite is the beautiful and notorious mistress of a high ranking German officer. Armand is a young musician half her age who falls obsessively in love with her. Their dangerous love story is played out against the background of Occupied Paris during WWII.
Marguerite background
Marguerite will be the World Premiere of a collaboration between Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg (Les Misérables, Miss Saigon and Martin Guerre), the Oscar award-winning musical legend Michel Legrand and lyricist Herbert Kretzmer (Les Misérables).
Marguerite is based on the novel La Dame aux Camélias by Alexandre Dumas; interestingly this book also inspired the opera, La Traviata and film, Moulin Rouge.
Henshall takes the lead
Ruthie Henshall, the award-winning West End and Broadway actress returns to the London stage to play Marguerite. Ruthie has impressive credentials, having appeared in A Chorus Line, Cats, Miss Saigon, Les Miserables, Crazy for You and She Loves You (for which she won the Best Actress in a Musical Olivier Award).
