About Monty Python's Spamalot

Monty Python’s Spamalot, written by Python Eric Idle, is ‘lovingly ripped off from the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail’. The musical is an irreverent retelling of the legend of King Arthur, which also parodies Broadway theatre.

Show story

Spamalot tells the story of King Arthur with a Monty Python twist. Cue the beautiful show girls, cows, French people and killer rabbits. Stir in a bit of King Arthur, the Lady of the Lake and the Knights of the Round Table and you have a hilarious send-up of the Arthurian legend, pop-culture and musicals in general.

Spamalot background

Spamalot the musical’s book and lyrics were written by Eric Idle, an original member of the Monty Python team. John Du Prez collaborated on the music with Mike Nichols directing. Running since March 2005, Spamalot has won three Tony Awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2004/5.

Pythonisms and pop culture

In Spamalot improvisation is rife and there are lots of nods to popular culture. During the Knights of Ni scene, a song is often worked into the script. Songs sung include ‘SexyBack’ by Justin Timberlake, ‘Milkshake’ by Kelis and ‘My Humps’ by the Black Eyed Peas. Britney Spears head-shaving has also featured.

King Arthur played by Sanjeev Bhaskar.
