About Oliver!

Oliver!

Oliver! is a British musical, with music and lyrics by Lionel Bart. Last seen on the London stage in 1994, Oliver! is set to make a big comeback thanks to the BBC’s musical talent show I’d Do Anything, which was won by Jodie Prenger. Rowan Atkinson has been confirmed in the role of Fagin.

Show story

Oliver! tells the story of an orphaned boy who escapes the brutality of the workhouse, only to fall in with a band of street thieves. But there’s more to Oliver’s history than meets the eye when the identity of his mother is discovered. Oliver! features the classic songs ‘Food, glorious food’, ‘You’ve got to pick a pocket or two’, ‘Consider yourself’, ‘As long as he needs me’ and ‘Oom-pah-pah’.

Oliver! background

Prolific theatre producer, Cameron Mackintosh heads up the 2008 Oliver! revival. Mackintosh took part in the BBC show I’d Do Anything – ensuring that the best young actors and actress took the coveted lead roles in his production. Mackintosh’s other credits include Les Miserables, Phantom, Cats, Avenue Q, Mary Poppins and My Fair Lady.

I’d Do Anything

The BBC’s show I’d Do Anything, hosted by Graham Norton, followed a similar format to past-hits ‘How Do You Solve a Problem like Maria’ and ‘Any Dream Will Do’. Over a lengthy audition process and a series of live shows, the theatrical hopefuls were whittled down to three boys for the role of Oliver (Gwion, Harry and Laurence) and one woman to play Nancy. That woman was 28 year old agony aunt and caberet singer, Jodie Prenger, who won the public vote and will appear as Nancy from January 2009.

Please note:
Rowan Atkinson will be on holiday from 26 Mar 2009 until 18 Jul 2009 inclusive.
