About Pygmalion
Sir Peter Hall brings his company of actors to the Old Vic in May 2008 to stage George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion (the inspiration for musical, My Fair Lady).
Play Plot
Pygmalion tells the story of Henry Higgins, a professor of phonetics who bets his friend, Colonel Pickering, that he can convince their peers that Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, is a refined lady of society. Whilst teaching Eliza elocution and etiquette, Professor Higgins starts to fall in love with her; but will she return his feelings?
Pygmalion background
Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw is based on Roman poet Ovid’s mythological epic, Metamorphoses, which tells the story of forms changing into new bodies. Peter Hall’s production of Pygmalion has toured the UK and comes to London’s Old Vic Theatre in May 2008, running until August 2008.
Impressive ensemble cast
The arrival of the Peter Hall Company production sees the return of Tim Piggott-Smith to the Old Vic Theatre as Henry Higgins. Piggott-Smith was last seen at the Old Vic in 1998 when he starred opposite Kevin Spacey (now the Old Vic’s Artistic Director) in The Iceman Cometh. The production also features Michelle Dockery as Eliza Doolittle and Una Stubbs as Mrs. Pearce.
