About Rent

Rent is back in the West End, with a contemporary new version for the 21st Century. Based on Pucinni’s La Boheme, rock musical Rent broke conventions in 1996 when it first opened. This new version replaces the guitars and grunge with pop club culture to give the show a modern edge.

Show story

Rent tells the story of eight young artists living in New York’s East Village. The musical explores their changing relationships and friendships, as they cope with HIV and AIDS. Ultimately, Rent is an emotional story about love, finding your voice and living for today.

Rent background

Rent was written by Jonathan Larson and is a modern retelling of Puccini’s opera La Boheme, with many striking similarities between the two. The highly-anticipated West End revival has been styled and reworked by the creative team behind Kylie Minogue and her Showgirl Tour, Jamiroquai and P J Harvey.

Challenging convention

Rent has changed the way that a generation feels about musical theatre by exploring controversial topics through the traditionally conservative medium. Rent was the first musical to openly feature gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans-gender characters. It also addresses themes such as HIV/AIDS, sexuality and drug taking.
