About The Lion King

The Lion King is an award-winning musical version of Disney’s film. A visual feast, with some classic songs - it is entertainment for the whole family. On stage at the West End’s Lyceum Theatre since 1999, The Lion King score is by Tim Rice and Elton John.

Show story

When lion cub Simba is born to King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi, Mufasa’s brother Scar realises he’s no longer heir to the throne. Scar plots to kill Simba and Mufasa but Simba escapes. The musical then follows Simba as he grows up away from the lion pride until the day comes when he has to face Scar to claim his kingdom.

The Lion King background

The Lion King began life as a Disney film: seeing its potential as a stage musical, Walt Disney Theatrical and Director Julie Taymor create a show for Broadway in 1994. The Lion King Musical opened in London five years later and has packed the Lyceum since.

Ground breaking show

The Lion King has broken new ground in theatrical technology, bringing to the stage the vastness of the African savannah and the complexity of the wildebeest stampede via clever staging methods. The colourful animal characters in The Lion King musical are brought to life using masks, costumes and giant, hollow puppets.
