About The Woman In Black
The Woman in Black is one of the most exciting and gripping plays ever staged, now in its 20th year at the Fortune Theatre in London's West End. Written by Susan Hill in 1983, The Woman in Black was adapted for the stage by Stephen Mallatratt and has been haunting audiences since 1989.
Play plot
Solicitor Arthur Kipps is obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over he and his family by the spectre of a Woman in Black: encountered whilst at the funeral of Mrs. Alice Drablow. Kipps enlists the talents of a skeptical young actor to help him retell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that haunts his soul.
Woman in Black Background
The Woman in Black, written by Susan Hill, is characterised by a brooding sense of menace, reminiscent of the works of M.R. James (a turn of the century ghost story writer). Stephen Mallatratt adapted the book for the stage, introducing the idea of the young actor who reenacts Arthur Kipps’ story. In the staged rehearsals the Woman in Black appears again to the actor, giving a spine chilling feeling of history repeating itself.
A real spectre?
It is reputed that the Fortune Theatre, home to The Woman in Black since 1989, is haunted by a ghost. The ghost takes the form of a woman in black, who began appearing shortly after a break-in at the theatre in Covent Garden. She is often seen by actors, watching from the wings, during performances. Fact or fiction – you decide?
