About The Aldwych Theatre

The Aldwych Theatre was built on the newly created Aldwych with ornate decorations in the Georgian style. It was actually built as part of a pair, together with the Waldorf Theatre, now known as the Novello Theatre. The theatre opened on 23 December 1905 with a performance of Blue Bell.

is the current resident show but the Aldwych Theatre has housed some of the world's finest acting talent: Basil Rathbone played Major Wharton in The Unknown in 1920 and Vivien Leigh followed her Academy Award-winning film performance by appearing in the Streetcar Named Desire at the Aldwych in 1949 (directed by her husband, Laurence Olivier).

The Royal Shakespeare Company of Stratford Upon Avon based their London productions at the Aldwych Theatre from 1962-1982. The early 1990s saw Joan Collins starring in Private Lives and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Whistle Down the Wind was resident for three years.
