About the Cambridge
The Cambridge Theatre is the latest home for the long-running musical show Chicago that actually began life here in the 1970s.
The Cambridge Theatre was originally built in 1929-39 in an expressionist style with steel, concrete, gold and silver décor. It was refurbished in red in 1950 and adorned with candelabra and chandeliers. There is a circular entrance foyer where you can see bronze friezes of nude figures in exercise poses by sculptor Anthony Gibbons Grinling.
Most performances have short-runs here and the building was even used as a cinema in the late 1930s and again in 1969. Famous shows include Grease (1996) with Shane Ritchie, ‘Jerry Springer – The Opera’ (2003) starring David Soul and ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’ (2005) starring Derren Brown.
