About the Duchess Theatre

Long-running show Buddy the Musical has now transferred to the Duchess Theatre.

The Duchess Theatre is one of the smallest ‘proscenium arched’ West End theatres and has 479 seats on two levels. It was designed by Ewen Barr and is built with the stalls below street level. The circle is narrower than the stalls and supported by steel girders from the roof. This also gives the theatre some very sight good lines.

The Duchess Theatre opened in November 1929 and a new interior décor was introduced under the direction of J.B. Priestley’s wife Mary Wyndham-Lewis in 1934.

Celebrated shows at the Duchess include Terence Rattigan’s ‘Deep Blue Sea’ (1952), Harold Pinter’s ‘The Caretaker’ (1960), the controversial ‘Oh Calcutta!’ (1974) and ‘Don’t Dress for Dinner’ (1992).

OPENED: 25th November 1929
SEATS: 479 on 2 levels
