DUKE OF YORKS

About the Duke Of York's Theatre

Hollywood star Orlando Bloom appearing in the play In Celebration was the latest actor to tread the boards at the Duke of York’s Theatre. In Celebration will be replaced by award-winning musical Rent from October 2007.

The Duke of York’s Theatre was originally opened as the Trafalgar Theatre and became known as the Trafalgar in 1894 before finally becoming the Duke of York’s (in honour of future King George V).

Puccini is reported to have seen David Belasco’s ‘Madame Butterfly’ here in 1900, before turning the tale into his famous opera. Peter Pan by J.M, Barrie was premiered here on 27 December 1904.

Many celebrated actors and shows have enjoyed great success here including Glenda Jackson in ‘Rose’, The Royal Court’s production of Ariel Dorfman’s ‘Death and the Maiden and Richard O’Brien’s ‘The Rocky Horror Show’.
