About the New London Theatre

The New London Theatre in London’s Covent Garden is built on the site of several taverns and music hall theatres. It has been known by many names, including The Great Mogul (at the end of the 17th Century), The Mogul Saloon (built in 1848), the Middlesex Music Hall and the Winter Garden Theatre (1919).

The current New London Theatre opened in 1972 with a production of ‘The Unknown Soldier and His Wife’ starring Peter Ustinov.

The New London theatre made its name with the musical ‘Cats’ by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Trevor Nunn which premiered here in 1981. Cats was to become the longest-running musical in West End history. A production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and the Boston's paint-splashed sensation Blue Man Group swiftly followed.

Next to grace the stage at the New London are The Royal Shakespeare Company’s productions of 'The Seagull' and 'King Lear', starring Ian Mckellan. Both productions are booking now. The world premiere of Trevor Nunn's new musical adaptation of 'Gone With the Wind' will open in Spring 2008.
