About the Novello Theatre

Today's Novello theatre was originally called The Waldorf. It is a twin with the Aldwych Theatre, which is on the other side of the Waldorf Hotel.

The theatre first changed it's name in 1909 to the Strand Theatre. The name changed again to the Whitney Theatre in 1911 and then reverted back to the Strand Theatre in 1913. That name stuck until 2005, when the theatre's new owners christened it the Novello theatre (in honour of Ivor Novello, who lived in a flat above the theatre from 1913 to 1951).

The theatre was refurbished in the 1930's: this refurbishment included the removal of the boxes around the rear of the Dress Circle. The theatre was again refurbished in the early 1970s. It is currently playing host to the musical 'Desperately Seeking Susan' with music by Debbie Harry and Blondie.
