About the Piccadilly Theatre

The Piccadilly Theatre is currently home to the hit musical Grease and it is certainly big enough to accommodate all the Danny and Sandy wannabes, being one of the largest theatres ever built in Britain.

When the spectacular art deco Piccadilly Theatre first opened in April 1928, the souvenir brochure declared that “if all the bricks used to build it were laid in a straight line, they would stretch from London to Paris.”

The Piccadilly Theatre has often made history. In its early days it was actually a cinema and showed the first talking picture in Britain – 'The Singing Fool' staring Al Jolson. In the 1990s it was home to the most successful commercial ballet season ever, The Amazing Motion Pictures production of Swan Lake.

Lynn Redgrave, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian Mckellan, Henry Fonda, Eric Sykes and Barbara Dickson have all enjoyed great success here.

OPENED: 27th April 1928
