About the Prince Edward Theatre

The Prince Edward Theatre in London’s West End was designed in 1930 by Edward Stone, with an interior designed by Marc-Henri Levy and Gaston Laverdet. It opened on 3 April 1930 with a performance of the musical 'Rio Rita'.

In 1935, the Prince Edward was converted into a dance and cabaret hall and renamed the ‘London Casino’, before being renamed again as the ‘Queensberry All Services Club’ in 1942. After the war, it became the London Casino once again before being converted into a cinema in 1954, reopening as the ‘Castino Cinerama Theatre’.

In 1978, the building was converted back into a theatre and given its original name, the Prince Edward. It reopened with a world première of the musical 'Evita' by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice; starring Elaine Paige and David Essex.

Mary Poppins is currently showing at the Prince Edward, following a strong musical tradition which includes Stephen Sondheim’s 'Show Boat' and 'West Side Story' and 'Some Like it Hot'.

The Jersey Boys will open here in February 2008.
