About the Queen's Theatre

Queen’s Theatre opened on 8 October 1907 in Shaftesbury Avenue, the heart of London’s West End. Built as a twin to the Gielguid Theatre, it retains an Edwardian interior but was rebuilt with a modern shell after the façade was bombed during the war.

Les Miserables has been showing at Queen's since 2004 having transferred from the nearby Palace Theatre. The director Cameron Mackintosh is working on a masterplan for a new Shaftesbury Avenue theatre complex. The Queen’s Theatre foyer will be amalgamated with the Gielguid to create a 1,200 seat theatre, while the new Sondheim Theatre will be built on the roof (opening scheduled for 2009).

Edith Evans, George Bernard Shaw, Basil Rathbone, John Gielgud, Noel Coward, Kenneth Branagh, Marlene Dietrich, Miranda Richardson, Nigel Hawthorne, Jane Lapotaire, Alec Guinness, Fiona Shaw and Maggie Smith have all appeared on the stage at the Queen’s Theatre.
